I really enjoyed this book--it was very unique and I learned about a new place and culture. It took me a long time to read, both because I haven't had too much time and because there's not too much of a driving force to keep you reading to find out what happens. It's strength lies in interesting characters that are slightly larger than life. The narrator is a woman who has mysteriously died right before a trip with a group of friends and acquaintances to Burma. Her spirit accompanies them on their adventures, usually making amusing commentaries about the actions of the other characters and the situations they encounter. One of the ideas of the book is the question of whether our good-intentioned actions to help others are indeed helpful. Sometimes they can even be harmful. I think at times we do something for someone else based on our own ideologies and mindset, not considering their own. The Golden Rule--"do unto others as you would have them do unto you"--should more aptly say "Do unto others as they would have you do for them." The difficulty in this is really knowing what others really want and need. I tend to over-analyze and then do nothing, or completely mess up and do the wrong thing. I guess it's a learning process that takes lots of practice.

But one thing I think you can count on with Amy Tan is experiencing life in another time or part of the world. I learned a lot about the culture, religion and government of Burma, a place I had never given any thought to before in my life. How did I ever make it through my life not knowing about Burma!
I should mention I halved the recipe, which was the perfect amount for the six of us. Next time I might make the whole recipe and use the leftovers for meatloaf sandwiches. I love meatloaf sandwiches!!
DO NOT watch this movie if you are squeamish about dirty restrooms, excessive saliva, or men wearing mauve lip gloss. DO watch this movie if you enjoy seeing men ice-skating in underwear and wearing frilly and/or pink clothing (please don't tell me if you do). There were some laughs, but not enough for me to enthusiastically recommend it. My gag reflex was activated a few times--if you've seen this I think you'll know what I mean. Life will definitely go on if you pass on this.I know things are getting bad when there is talk of burning the crockpot recipe book and I get questions like, "When are we going to stop having crock pot recipes?" Just for the record, we have thrown in some normal dinners, and I do usually offer something at the table I know they will like--like vegetables. That sounds like a joke, but it isn't. Somehow all of my children like most vegetables. We have to say things like, "Finish your casserole and then you can have some broccoli." Too bad they like junk food just as much. They would pick ice-cream over broccoli.
Here's a recipe we had a few days ago:

Dan really liked this, but he was the only one! My kids usually like vegetable beef soup, so I thought this would be a good dinner night, but I would have to agree that our other recipe is better. Sorry, Dan! I don't know if I'll make it again.
I liked this EASY recipe, but I think it needed more zip. The recipe called for low-fat pepper-jack cheese, which I've never seen anywhere, so I just used RF Mexican Four Cheese mix. I also should note that I forgot to sprinkle the chili powder between layers. So you can see why it was a little bland! Next time I might try sprinkling it with taco seasoning, or even adding seasoned ground beef. The kids ate it reasonably well. They didn't love it, but we didn't have tears, plugged noses, or gagging going on, which is about as good as it gets around here.
I loved hearing everyone's lists and I learned a lot about everyone! I feel like I talk about myself so much that you probably know all about me, but here is mine:
- I prefer the feeling of being hungry to the feeling of being full.
- I dance and sing to embarrass Kaylynn when her friends are over. (She helped me with this one)
- Any kind of applause triggers me to cry; when Jeremy's team makes a goal, it can be very embarrassing.
- I have a short attention span, unless I'm watching an hours-long Brit Lit Chick Flick or Lord of the Rings.
- I blush very easily for no reason sometimes.
- I hate getting dressed for church or anything that I have to wear a dress for.
- Things that actually make me forget about food: playing volleyball or tennis, woodworking/tole painting, sewing.
- I love romantic chicks flicks but I also realize that they completely misrepresent the male gender.
- When I grow up I want to be a librarian or a nutritionist.
- I like to do laundry, mostly for the fabric softener high, and the end result of nicely hung up clothes and cute little piles of fold up clothes.
- The most enjoyable thing for me to read is fantasy/sci fi.--I acknowledge my geekiness and revel in it. Favorite: Shanarra series by Terry Brooks
- I am drawn to novel packaging in food products, although I usually don't succumb if the price is too high. I had a $5.99 box of brownies in my hand the other day just because the package was so cool, and although I didn't buy it, I keep checking every time I go to the store to see if it goes on sale. I bought some organic canned pumpkin with a cute label a couple of weeks ago and just loved opening the cupboard and seeing it. I would post a picture if I could.
- When I say I like Steve Carell, I mean I think he's a babe. My family finds this disturbing. Do you?
I also had a hot dog adventure as part of this dinner. Has anyone seen Hoffy's Extra Lean Beef Hot Dogs? I had noticed these at the store but was afraid to buy them because they only have 45 calories per hot dog! Most hot dogs are about 180 calories. That's 75% fewer calories than regular! I was convinced that they had to be totally disgusting, but was willing to try because at least they were all beef, a personal prerequisite for hot dogs. Amazingly, they were actually pretty good, so now I'm wondering if it's a typo!
Movie Review--Thumbs up for Evan Almighty! It had some cute laughs, Steve Carell, a good message, Steve Carell, very little bad language, Steve Carell, inspiring moments, and Steve Carell. Did I mention that Steve Carell is in it? The man fascinates me! I could watch his face for hours. He is part of my Big Three Men of Comedy, along with Jon Stewart and Ben Stiller. I wondered if he has a hard time not looking at the camera in movies because it is so much a part of The Office!

I actually got some sleep last night, so I can write in sentences again. It wasn't a perfect night. I got up with Amy twice, and also Jeremy twice. Once Jeremy was freaking out in his sleep and I had to calm him down, and the second time he was standing in the middle of this room pointing at the laundry basket in his closet and saying, "Kaylynn is in there!" I told him that, no, she wasn't in there and he said, "Oh, well I guess I'll go back to bed then." I guess I was doing weird things last night too, but I don't totally remember what. I know I turned on the light and told Dan something weird, but I'll have to ask him what it was. So it's hereditary--sorry, Jeremy! We also both seem to have panic attacks waking us up out of sleep, and I hate the fact that I somehow passed that gene on to him, because it TOTALLY SUCKS!!!!
Anyways, I should get to the food . . .This was so easy--you just open the cans and chili seasoning packet and some water, mix them all in the crockpot, and turn it on for 6 to 7 hours. It is very much like Taco Soup, something we have a lot, so it wasn't totally foreign to the kids. Taco Soup has ground beef in it and taco seasoning instead of chili seasoning. Dan and Jeremy said they prefered Taco Soup, but the rest of us liked this one better. (I may have been influenced by the easiness of it!) We served it with Baked Tostitos Scoops (very yummy) and Sargento Reduced Fat Mexican Blend cheese (also good, I use this a lot). Kaylynn's friend Brandy was over, and she really liked it. She's a vegetarian, so it worked out well. A definite repeat--I would say just add some browned ground beef if you think you would miss it. I should note that I used Henry's organic red beans--mostly I picked these because they were the ones on sale, but they were very delicious, and I remember reading that red beans in particular are little nutritional powerhouses. These kinds of things excite me! I really think there is a health freak inside of me waiting to burst out! It's just trapped by my oversized omentum and stubborn cellulite.
got 2 hours of sleep last night. can't write in sentences. recipe good and easy. used frozen chicken breasts-3, mozzarella instead of swiss. stuffing mix not very flavorful, think I needed to shake the bag a bit because you only use 2 cups--makes me irrationally mad when you only use part of a package. all kids hated. Dan wants me to make again. don't know if I will. would use swiss next time. maybe mix a bit of butter with stuffing mix--don't tell the healthy Prevention people.
I think this is a great recipe for young kids. We all love traditional baked macaroni and cheese, which is much better, but this crockpot recipe is easier, and Anna and Amy ate a lot! Jeremy did not like it at all, which is unusual for him, but I think he was expecting it to taste a bit more like our usual. It was definitely edible. And I'm sure it has a lot less calories than the baked variety which has butter and I use full-fat cheese (for this I used 1/3 less fat cheese.)
Quick Movie Review--don't waste your time on Wild Hogs. Maybe it was talked up too much for me, but I was disappointed and slightly disgusted by some of the humor. I did laugh a few times, but nothing really compares to the laughs of The Office these days. It has raised the bar for my funny bone. (And maybe lowered other standards.)
Quick Couch Potato Confession--I've been trying to watch some of the new shows, but I'm just not with-it enough to manage the DVR. Chuck was supposed to be taping tonight but wasn't, a show was too low of quality, and I have yet to watch Kid Nation with the kids. I haven't seen any of The Office because we didn't finish Season 3 in time, and then the DVR wasn't working. I did watch Biggest Loser, but FF through most of it due to boredom. I also watched last week's Chuck, which I liked--a bit corny but appealing. Has anyone watched Pushing Daisies? That one looks good to me. Anything else good that anyone has seen?
Aren't you all glad that you know every detail of my entertainment life? Not a TV show, movie, or book goes by without me blogging about it! But I just tell myself, "It's my blog, and I can write about whatever I want!" Such freedom of expression!

I've added a video to the left with clips from a great movie called Falling for a Dancer. Has anyone else seen it? It's another four hour series, set in Ireland, but it definitely doesn't have the lofty feel of North and South. It's actually very gritty, intense and emotional; but also has its inspirational moments and romance. Here's a succinct plot summary from imdb: "Romantic drama set in rural Ireland of the 1930s. The story begins when 19-year-old Elizabeth has a brief fling with an actor and falls pregnant. Community pressure forces her to marry a dull middle-aged man, but maybe there is hope on the horizon." I don't think it's rated, but I would say it's PG-13 level with some of the material in it, but I personally was pretty comfortable with most of it. I don't know if that is really saying much though--everybody has different threshholds for different things. I would love to hear someone else's opinion of it. I know it's available from Netflix, but I don't know about Blockbuster. Maybe I'll just have to buy it to share! Anyways, check out the video!I have so many thoughts on this single recipe! I guess a list is in order:
Why are these in a healthy cookbook--430 calories a serving, 14 grams of fat? And who is going to eat just one serving?
Is there any need to improve upon plain brownies made from a box?
What's the point in doing something in a crockpot that only takes two hours? (We had to rush home from our errands last night so the brownies wouldn't burn.)
What do you do with the extra brownie mix? (The recipe calls for 2 1/2 cups of brownie mix) Of course you're going to mix it up and grab a spoon, again defeating the purpose of healthy eating.
Having said all that, they did taste pretty good. I would compare them to the Ghiaradelli Chocolate Muffins made from a box, which would be easier, and I bet less calories. Or if you're in a regular brownie mood, just mix up you're favorite box! I will admit to being a brownie snob--I only like Ghiaradelli brownies--other brands just don't have that deep, intense flavor.
By the way, I appreciate all of your comments on the Crockpot blogs, but I should warn you there are about 50 more recipes left, so I don't want you to feel like you have to comment all the time--I won't be thinking, "Why isn't anyone commenting!! Boo hoo! Nobody likes me!" or anything like that. I know it might get old, but I feel impelled to share each and every one.
I'm think I'm going to eat a brownie right now, but I have to get the crockpot out of the oven. I had a meeting here today and didn't have quite as much time to clean up as I needed, so there are several pots and pans hiding in the oven.
These were both good! I like brown rice better than white, so I tried cooking the rice halfway before adding it to the crockpot because it usually takes twice as long to cook as white, but it was a little too mushy, so next time I'll just add it dry. Because of this, I think that white rice would definitely turn out too mushy, so maybe add it in the middle of cooking time? The kids were much more open to this because it looked more familiar than a big chunk of meat or chicken. I guess I've taught them to prefer casseroles. The only complaint was from Jeremy who could tell the broccoli was different than fresh and didn't like it. I was worried about this myself, but I thought the frozen broccoli was pretty good. Definite repeat recipe. I should probably confess that I used reduced-fat cheese rather than nonfat cheese. I was just too chicken--no pun intended.
I was worried about the potatoes, seeing that I needed to use fat-free sour cream. I was sure they would taste funny, but they didn't. I didn't peel the potatoes, which made it so much easier, and the skins were really yummy in it--not overwhelming. I liked these so much that I had a second helping, which kind of defeats the purpose of a healthy recipe. I'll just have to focus on the extra fiber I got! Also a repeat recipe.

The soup was Jeremy's pick. We asked him why he picked it since he doesn't like onions, and he said because it was French. That makes sense, doesn't it? Dan and I loved the soup, but then we both love onions. If you like caramelized onions, you will like the flavor of this soup, and it was great with the cheese covered bread dipped in it. Anna wins the contest for thinking of the most euphamistic ways to say she doesn't like the new dinners. She described this as "uncommon." But she did put it into her bowl without too much fuss, and had a few small bites.
Most of us liked the Cran-Peary Compote, and it made the house smell very good all day. We thought it would be great with a scoop of ice-cream. I love Dreyer's Slow-Churned 1/3 less fat Vanilla Bean Ice-cream, but we didn't have any.
I hope you all like the Halloween theme! If anybody cares, the regular music is down at the bottom of the blog.
